DESSERTENNE WINS GOLDEN F1 MATCH RACE IN SINGAPORE!
FRENCH LIGIER SPORTS TEAM TAKES 1-2 FINISH!
SINGAPORE - (19TH OF SEPTEMBER, 2005) - Two team mates battled to the finals of the 1st Annual Golden Match Race for F1 boats on beautiful Marina Bay in downtown Singapore ending an exciting weekend of powerboat racing with the French Ligier Sports Team taking the top two spots when the 18 race heats came to an end.
Veteran driver Philippe Dessertenne of La Rochelle, France lost only once all day while winning five other one on one drag racing two lap features that had drivers launching off from a dead start for two strong laps side by side to see who was fastest on the tricky waters around a 50 second course.
Dessertenne, saved his best effort for the final against his team mate Philippe Chiappe of Rouen by setting fast time of the afternoon with a 49.92 second effort for the two laps being the only driver to do a sub 50 second attempt all day.
"I am truly excited about our run today in this Golden Match Race," stated the driver from the West Coast of France. "I may have been more excited seeing my team mate reach the final with him coming from the losers bracket then me going 5-1 and taking the victory. The team will surely celebrate this one together tonight."
David Trask of Australia was hoping to reach the final running a record to 2-2 after losing to Dessertenne in the Semi-Finals having defeated him early in the session. The driver of the XPV Racing Team took 3rd overall defeating rookie Arif Al Zafeen of the United Arab Emirates taking the last place on the podium.
Danish driver Gert Ladefoged coming from a 41 degree temperature and missing the Grand Prix of Singapore on Sunday, did a great job reaching the Quarter-Finals before finally losing to Dessertenne in the 14th of 18 heat races ending his afternoon.
Italian Fabio Comparato who was expected to be one of the favourites coming into the event dropped out on the 13th heat with mechanical problems. Englishman Andy Elliott did the same as his fuel pump gave up after the 7th heat and he was done for the day.
Bob Trask of the XPV Racing Team lost out early in the racing effort and was classified in the final position against some strong competition early in the event.
All in all the Golden Match Race in Singapore for F1 boats turned out to be a great success for both the drivers and spectators alike with the next event scheduled for the weekend of the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi in early December. More drivers will be more determined than ever to stop the Ligier Sports train from again rolling out of town with all the hardware.
